Sleep Apnea can go on for weeks, months or even years without ever being detected.

Often, the signs of a sleeping disorder aren’t noticed until there is a serious problem.

A serious sleep disorder occurs when a person’s breathing is obstructed during sleep.

If this is untreated you will stop breathing repeatedly during your sleep, it could be up to hundreds of times a night. This means your brain — and the rest of your body — may not get the right amount of oxygen.

There are several types of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

The more common form, this is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep

Central Sleep Apnea

Unlike OSA, the airway is not blocked, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control centre.

Mixed Apnea

A mixture of Central and Obstructive Apnea Events.

Hypopnea

When you change the depth and rate of respiration between 25% – 70% of “Normal” respiration.

Considering the potential life-threatening risks, Sleep Apnea can have on you, any signs that a sleep disorder is present should never be ignored.
