Snoring happens when there is a collapse, blockage or restriction to the upper airway and it obstructs the flow of air through the back of the mouth or nose.
The sound is created by the vibration of the soft tissues at the back of the throat.
Drugs such as alcohol, muscle relaxants and sleeping tablets can cause snoring by making the tongue and muscles in the throat relax, go floppy and vibrate.
Weight gain can also exacerbate snoring, because one of the causes of the turbulence in the throat is the narrowing of the airway due to neck fat
Nasal congestion from a cold or allergies can cause snoring, as can eating inflammatory foods at night, though this would be only temporary.
The primary symptom of snoring is unmistakable – the often loud, harsh or hoarse noises that you make while you are asleep. Other symptoms may include waking up with a sore throat, dry mouth, headaches and much more.
